I have been homeschooling since starting with Asher at age 3 (2009)

Here is a look at our curricula so far:

Eighth Grade (age 13) - MIDDLE SCHOOL


  • Bible: daily: Bible Study Fellowship classes and AMP quiet time for church youth group
  • Grammar: Analytical Grammar, season 3
  • Writing: English I course through The Potter's School
  • Math: Finish Shormann Algebra 1, then Shormann Algrebra II
  • History:  Modern history through Veritas (self-paced)
  • Science:  Physical Science (Apologia)
  • Study Skills: 1-semester class through The Potter's School
  • Music: Piano (weekly) and Steel Pan (2x per week)
  • Sport: iSwim
  • Extracurricular: Dolphin Quest Junior Apprenticeship Programme and working at Lindo's packing groceries


Seventh Grade (age 12) - MIDDLE SCHOOL


  • Bible: daily: Bible Study Fellowship classes and AMP quiet time for church youth group
  • Reading: daily: 45 minutes of free reading, 30 minutes assigned reading
  • Grammar: Analytical Grammar, season 2
  • Writing: Adventures in Writing 6 course through The Potter's School
  • Math: Saxon Algebra 1 then Shormann Algebra 1
  • History:  Mystery of History, vol. 3
  • Science:  Chemistry for the Logic Stage as the spine, with several experiment kits throughout
  • Spanish:  Spanish I-A  through The Potter's School
  • Music: Piano (weekly) and Steel Pan (2x per week)
  • Sport: iSwim
  • Extracurricular: Dolphin Quest Junior Apprenticeship Programme

Sixth Grade (age 11) - MIDDLE SCHOOL


  • Bible: daily: Who am I? by Apologia. Also quiet time/memorization through our church's Olympians program, BSF
  • Reading: daily: 60 minutes of free reading, 45 minutes assigned reading
  • Spelling: Spelling Workout G & H
  • Grammar: Analytical Grammar, season 1
  • Writing: Adventures in Writing 5 course through The Potter's School
  • Math: Saxon Algebra 1/2
  • Logic: Basics of Critical Thinking
  • History:  Mystery of History, vol. 2
  • Science:  Earth Science & Astronomy for the Logic Stage as the spine, with several experiment kits throughout
  • Latin:  First Form Latin
  • Music: weekly piano lessons
  • Sport: Karate

Fifth Grade (age 10)

  • Bible: daily: Who is God? by Apologia. Also quiet time/memorization through our church's Olympians program
  • Reading: daily: 60 minutes of free reading, 45 minutes assigned reading
  • Spelling: 4x/week: Spelling Workout F
  • Grammar: 4x/week: Following the Plan by Rod & Staff
  • Writing: weekly: Following the Plan and creative writing exercises
  • Math: daily: Saxon Math 7/6
  • Logic: Building Thinking Skills, level 2
  • History: 2x/week: From Adam to Us plus other sources
  • Geography: Daily Geography Practice (Evan-Moor)
  • Science: 2x/week: God's Wonderful World by Rod & Staff
  • Latin: 3x/week: Latina Christiana
  • Music: weekly piano lessons
  • Sport: karate


Fourth Grade (age 9)
  • Bible: daily: Answers for Kids by Answers in Genesis. Also regular Bible verses memorization on our own as well as through our church's AWANA program
  • Reading: daily: 45 min. assigned reading, 45 min. free reading
  • Spelling: daily: Spelling Workout E
  • Grammar: 3x/week: First Language lessons for the Well-Trained Mind, Level 4
  • Writing: 4x/week: Writing with Ease, Level 4, and Cursive Success by Handwriting Without Tears
  • Vocabulary: 2x/week: 101 Doodle Definitions
  • Memory Work: daily
  • Math: 4x/week: Saxon Math 6/5
  • History: weekly: Story of the World, Vol. 4, plus Virginia history
  • Science: weekly: Physics, Physics Experiments for Children
  • Latin: 3x/week: The Big Book of Lively Latin I
  • Music: weekly piano lesson


Third Grade (age 8)
  • Bible: daily: Growing with God by Positive Action Bible Curriculum, Olympians, BSF
  • Reading: daily: 30 min. assigned reading, 45 min. "fun" reading
  • Spelling: 4x/week: Spelling Workout D Asa is using All About Spelling, level 2
  • Grammar: 3x/week: First Language Lessons for the Well Trained Mind, Level 3
  • Writing: 4x/week: Writing with Ease, Level 3, and Cursive Handwriting by Handwriting Without Tears
  • Vocabulary: 2x/week: 101 Doodle Definitions
  • Memory Work: daily 
  • Logic: weekly: Dr. Funster's Think A Minutes by The Critical Thinking Co.
  • Math: 4x/week: Saxon Math 5/4 Asa is doing Saxon Math 3
  • History: weekly: Story of the World, Vol. 3
  • Science: weekly: Chemistry, Adventures with Atoms and Molecules Asa is doing marine biology (The Good and the Beautiful curriculum)
  • German: 2x/week: Rosetta Stone
  • Typing: weekly practice
  • Music: weekly piano lesson


Second Grade (age 7)
  • Bible: daily; Finding God's Promises by Positve Action Bible Curriculum, Olympians, BSF
  • Reading: daily; I read aloud to Asher, he reads aloud to me, and he also spends 30 minutes reading "fun" books alone 
  • Spelling: daily; Spelling Workout C Asa needed a bit more help, so we used All About Spelling, level 1 this year
  • Grammar: 3x/week; First Language Lessons for the Well Trained Mind, Level 2
  • Writing: 4x/week; Writing with Ease, Level 2, and My Printing Book by Handwriting Without Tears
  • Math: 4x/week; Saxon Math 3 Asa is doing Saxon Math 2
  • History/Geography: 3x/week; Story of the World, Vol. 2
  • Science: 2x/week; Earth Science - 18 weeks of lessons from The Encyclopedia of Our World followed by 18 weeks of The Encyclopedia of Space
  • German: 2-3x/week; Rosetta Stone
  • Typing: "Typing Instructor for Kids" for PC
  • Music: weekly private piano lessons through The Greater Richmond School of Music
  • Art: 3-4x/week; Drawing with Children
  • Sport: weekly gymnastics classes (Aerial East Gymnastics) and tennis (Play Tennis Hanover)

First Grade (age 6)
  • Bible (daily): Foundations , Olympians, BSF
  • Phonics/Reading (daily): We are finishing up The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading. Asher is also required to spend 30 minutes every day reading alone, and I try to read aloud to him every day from a chapter book.
  • Spelling (daily): Spelling Workout (A & B)
  • Grammar (3x/week): First Language Lessons for the Well Trained Mind
  • Writing (4x/week): Writing with Ease, Level 1, and Handwriting Without Tears: Printing Power
  • Math (4x/week): Saxon Math 2 Asa is doing Saxon Math 1
  • History/Geography (3x/week): Story of the World, Vol. 1
  • Science (2x/week): Various books/encyclopedias with 20 weeks on animals, 10 weeks on the human body, and then 6 weeks on plants
  • German: Rosetta Stone German I, Homeschool edition
  • Music: Asher attends weekly piano lessons
  • Art: Asher attends weekly art classes

Kindergarten (age 5)
  • Bible (daily): Gopher Buddies Quiet Time by Word of Life. Asher also memorized two Bible verses each week (one being his weekly Sunday school memory verse and the other corresponding to each letter of the alphabet) 
  • Phonics/reading (1 lesson daily): The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading and Letters and Sounds K by Abeka Homeschool
  • Handwriting (1 lesson daily): Handwriting Without Tears: My Letters & Numbers, My Printing Book
  • Math (1-2 lessons daily): Horizons Math K
  • History (2-4 times weekly): Living Long Ago, The Usborne Internet-Linked Children's Encyclopedia
  • Science (2-4 times weekly, with one weekly science activity): The Usborne Internet-Linked Children's Encyclopedia, Usborne Book of Science Activities Vol. 2
  • Read-Alouds (poetry and 1-2 chapters of a chapter-book daily): The House at Pooh Corner, The Story of Dr. Doolittle, The Story About Ping, The Arnold Lobel Book of Mother Goose, The Llama Who Had No Pajama, Johnny Appleseed, Capyboppy, My Father's Dragon, Dolphin Adventure, The Light at Tern Rock, Wonderful Wizard of Oz, The Apple & the Arrow, A Grain of Rise, The Hundred Dresses, Twenty and Ten, The Boxcar Children, In Grandma's Attic, Five True Dog Stories, Family Under the Bridge, James Herriot's Treasury for Children, Dolphin Treasure, Mary on Horseback
Pre-K (age 4)
We used the Sonlight Pre-Kindergarten multi-subject program.

Pre-K (age 3)
We used the Sonlight Little Learners multi-subject program.
