Oh boy, oh boy - what joy!

I have little boys. I have two sweet, funny, crazy, adventurous little boys.

To be honest, I never imagined myself as the mother of boys. As a child, I played with dolls and imagined myself the mother of daughters someday. I pictured myself surrounded by ruffles and dollhouses and hair bows and giggling, but I ended up surrounded by blue jeans and toy cars and baseball caps and practical jokes.

When Asher was born, I was glad he was a boy. I always liked the idea of an older brother, so I was happy my eldest was male.

I always assumed my next child would be a girl. That's what I thought I wanted, and that's what I was certain I was getting until the ultrasound revealed otherwise. I'm ashamed to say that for the first few minutes after the technician told us it was a boy, I was disappointed. I was in shock. For some reason I had been sure the baby inside me was a girl. But now the tech was telling me I would be the mother to not one but two boys. There would be no shopping for pink things. No tea parties. No long hair to braid.

This was a scenario I honestly - ridiculously - had not anticipated.

I'm relieved to say after the initial shock wore off, I wasn't disappointed anymore. I was happy the baby was alive and well, measuring the right size with a strong heartbeat. So many families are not so fortunate. This was another sweet baby boy for us to love.

I left the ultrasound with a sense of peace about our new son, suddenly excited to be able to use Asher's old baby clothes again. I was looking forward to picking out another boy's name. I was also happy for Asher, who was getting a brother.

Brothers. Boys. Sons. This is my life.

I love having little boys, and here are a few reasons why.

The toys.

I find set-ups like this all the time where-ever Asher as been. The sweetness is all in the details. Just take a peek through the window in the tower on the right:

Asher has filled the tower with his favorite marbles :)

No matter how young they are, boys know exactly what wheels do.

Asa is 16 months old, and he pushes that toy tractor around the house like he knows exactly what it is. Boys gravitate toward things with wheels, and I find it so endearing.

They are ninjas.

Like, literally.

Finding Asher in various ninja costumes is not an uncommon occurrence.

Keeping it casual

Boys are just fun. Period.

SO fun. They do fun things. They play with fun toys. They drive around big fields in their Power Wheels car, stopping to pick up interesting-looking sticks.

Their imaginative play is awesome.

Asher's To-Do list

They can be so unbelievably sweet.

Asher leaves notes. It's sort of his thing.

And, to my great pleasure, Asa appears to share his brother's sensitive, sweet spirit.

These are only a few reasons why boys rule. I don't doubt little girls are also fun and a blessing to their parents, but for now, I am enjoying being the mom to two precious boys.

Matthew 6:8
Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

Psalm 37:3-4
Trust in the Lord and do good;
dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Of course, God knew all along that I was meant to mother these two precious boys, even if I thought I was going to have daughters. He knew the desires of my heart, even if I myself didn't know what those desires were until I held them in my arms.

We don't know if we'll have more children, but if we do, I wouldn't mind another boy.

In fact, I'd love it.
